SCHOOL LIFE

Sport

At King’s, we try to foster a love of physical well-being that will accompany our pupils throughout their lives. Although winning is clearly our aim in all the sports we offer, our ethos is based on the benefits of team work, fair play and opportunities for all. It is a philosophy borne out by the large numbers of teams that turn out each weekend and by our frequent success against schools of far greater size.

The major games for boys are rugby, hockey and cricket.  Athletics, badminton, basketball, cross-country, fives, golf, football, squash, swimming, and tennis are also sports played at King's. There are regular fixtures for all these sports and the aim of the Sports Department at King's is to provide the opportunities for students to represent the School in as many sports as their abilities allow.

All of these sports are included in the House Competitions calendar which runs throughout the year and culminates in the house tug-of-war on the penultimate day of the summer term.
We hope never to lose sight of the fact that sport is meant to be fun. It is also an essential means of channelling the almost boundless energy of our pupils into positive efforts. Among our staff are highly accomplished coaches but, where necessary, we use specialist coaches.

As well as a wide range of high-quality indoor and outdoor facilities – including a synthetic playing surface for hockey and tennis, a shale surface for hockey and athletics, squash and fives courts, an indoor shooting range and a sports hall with cricket
nets and a climbing wall – there is a recently re-equipped fitness centre available to all.

Girls’ sport at King’s has experienced rapid growth in recent years in terms of both participation and success. A Head of Girls’ Sport ensures that the girls’ sporting efforts and achievement are increasingly recognised.
Our girls’ teams are becoming a real force to be reckoned with and they often win matches against schools with much larger numbers to draw on.

The major games for girls are hockey, netball and tennis but, as in the case of the boys, many other sports are available, including athletics, swimming, rounders, cricket, volleyball, tag rugby, football, fives, squash, golf, equestrian, biathlon and cross-country.

At an age when sport all too often starts to take a backseat, happily it is still a key component of all our girls’ routines. Once established, a pattern of regular exercise can be hard to break, providing a major element in a healthy and rewarding life once school days are left far behind.
