ACADEMIC SUBJECTSThe Times Secondary Schools Report, 19th January 2006 - King's Bruton is tenth in the A Spring of Knowledge in a busy school environment where pupils are encouraged to pursue a wide variety of interests, there is one objective at King's that supersedes everything else: the pursuit of academic excellence.
As an independent school, King's is in the fortunate position of being able to draw on the National Curriculum without being tied to it. It is a freedom that allows us to be more flexible, pausing to consolidate or deepen students' understanding of a topic or allow discussion, rather than feeling obliged to press on feverishly. King's is not a hot house but it does pride itself on enabling each pupil to realize his or her potential. We cater equally for the high flyer destined for straight A*s and for the pupil for whom a D grade at A-level represents a triumph. This is possible through the care and enthusiasm of our teachers, who work hard to offer lessons that are lively and enjoyable, as well as rigorous and demanding. The small class sizes that predominate in all year groups allow pupils to receive a great deal of personal attention throughout their time at King's. Pupils who are not prepared to work hard will find that there are many people in the community who will make it their responsibility to ensure they do. No one is allowed to slip through the net. It is essential that pupils know where they stand academically and what they must do to improve. Tutors meet regularly with their tutees to identify areas of strength and weakness and then set targets for improvement. The tutors act as a conduit for day-to-day feedback from teachers and they are, therefore, ideally placed to spot patterns and tackle problems should they arise.
Tutors will also know their tutees well and so they can ensure that teachers are aware of any circumstances in the pupils' day-to-day lives at King's that might be affecting their academic work. King's has also evolved a rigorous reporting system. Every three or four weeks, pupils are graded for effort and attainment and, at the end of every term, they receive a full set of reports on their performance. In addition, new pupils receive a report at the end of their first half-term. King's has an impressive array of academic facilities on its compact campus-like site. These include the Hobhouse Science Centre, a recently refurbished building for geography, economics and business studies, and a fine Design Centre. Each department has its own library and resources, which supplement the central Norton Library. Here pupils have the benefit of spacious and comfortable reading and research facilities. The Times Secondary Schools Report, 19th January 2006 - King's Bruton is tenth in the 'Most Valued Added' league table.
